Bi-monthly meeting of MIT-BNL He3-ABS Collaboration
Attendees: Frank Rathmann, Prajwal MohanMurthy, Haixin Huang, Vera S.
1. Hydrogen Target Transport & Infrastructure
- Planning for moving hydrogen jet target from tunnel to IP4.
- Considering container housing with control room.
- Need strong push to secure space near AGS due to internal competition.
2. Candidate Locations Around AGS
- C20 area preferred; AGS beta-function periodicity simplifies choice.
- Must evaluate cable access, openings, tunnel entry options.
3. Staging / Assembly Space Requirement
- Need ~10×10 m area, ~12 ft height, 2-Ton crane/rolling access.
- Essential for pre-installation tests and repair work.
- High Bay (510) crowded; expansion may face resistance.
4. Alternative Space – Old Synchrotron Light Source Building
- George Mahler manages the area.
- Possibly long-term usable space; weather protected area unclear.
- Haixin to coordinate walk-through.
5. Tunnel Access / Physical Constraints
- South Gate large-block access point available; partial assembly required inside.
6. Timeline & Visits
- Tunnel walk-through planned for Nov 25 between Frank and Haixin.
- Prajwal visit planned for Dec 9–11; BNL guest appointment needed and applied right after this meeting.
7. Long-Term Space Considerations
- He-3 system expected to remain at AGS for several years.
8. Coordination with Dave Chan
- Dave needs detailed walk-through of H-jet move.
- Frank and engineer Rick Porchedu to coordinate.
9. DOE Proposal & Funding Timeline
- DOE accepted solicitation; review expected Feb–Mar.
- Budget revisions likely needed to match BNL 2-year cycle.
- Continuing Resolution to Jan 31, 2026; possible shutdown delays.
10. Risks Identified
- Post-RHIC shutdown space competition will intensify.
- DOE approval may be delayed.
11. Action Items
Prajwal:
- Analyze lattice files from Frank; coordinate 2026-27 contract with MIT+BNL fiscal.
Haixin:
- schedule tunnel access request. Coordinate space/lab options.
Frank:
- Coordinate with Haixin on lab space; send lattice files to Prajwal.
All:
- Identify 10×10 m year-round accessible space; finalize before RHIC shutdown.
